Video video games are more and more enmeshed within the enterprise cycle of Massive Tech. After the pandemic increase, revenue warnings are piling up, from Murderer’s Creed developer Ubisoft Leisure SA to Frontier Developments Plc, and business layoffs are mounting.
But in contrast to the expressions of shock and schadenfreude seen on-line as Alphabet Inc. staff expertise their first layoffs – full with the stereotyped imagery of entitled Gen-Zers shedding entry to the company tiki bar – what’s taking place in gaming exposes a much more dystopian imaginative and prescient of the digital office. A threatened strike this week at Ubisoft in France offers a glimpse of battles to come back.
